Family Names - Introduction

Three items need consideration, being both the individual (single) names and the double-name.

Of the name "van Waterschoot", a number of thoughts exist.  There is "Rietstap's Armorial General & Dictionary of Names" which offers a particular (olden) view, coupled with various modern considerations and "family legend" and/or "anecdotal" views.

Of the name "van der Gracht", I do not yet have an authorative "olden" view, nor any anecdotal view.  That offered here has been based upon my assessment of available information, coupled with other derivations.

At some point in time, and possibly more than once, the joint "van Waterschoot van der Gracht" name came in to being.  The more definitive of these occurred in the 1700s, though there has been reference as early as the 1580s, but confirming information has not been obtained to authenticate this.  On 07-Aug-1746, Joannes van Waterschoot (1725-1782) married Judoca van der Gracht (b: 1726).  Judoca died on 17-Sep-1748.  Joannes then married Elisabeth Verschragen on 01-Mar-1749.
